Himachal Pradesh is a fascinating state of India. Blessed with apple orchards, wild flowers, rushing streams, Himachal Pradesh is a place worth exploring. How to reach Himachal Pradesh.

One can reach Himachal Pradesh by air, train or by road. The nearest airport is Kullu, which is 23 kms away. The nearest railway station is at Kalka, which is 90 kms away. If one is opting to reach Himachal via road, then from Chandigarh, it is about 117 kms away, from Kullu- 220 kms, from Manali- 260 kms, from Delhi- 343 kms, from Pathankot- 380 kms, from Ambala- 151 kms, from Chail- 43 kms, and from Dehradun, it is 240 kms. There are many buses and taxi services that one can avail to reach Himachal Pradesh.


Kangra The small town of Kangra was the capital of the erstwhile rulers of the Chand dynasty. It is set amongst the picturesque settings of the Kangra valley at the foothills of the majestic Dhauladhar range. The area around Kangra is known for its ancient temples and picturesque surroundings, which attract tourists.

Manali
Manali is 40 Kms from Kulu valley to the north, Manali is situated near the end of the valley on the National Highway leading to Leh. The landscape is breath taking as all around it is outlined against the horizon. One sees well defined snow capped peaks, the Beas river with its clear water meandering through between the town on the side and on other side are deodar and pine trees, tiny leveled fields and fruits orchards. It is an excellent place for a holiday, a favorite starting point for trekkers to Lahaul, Spiti, Kinnaur, Chamba Leh and Zanskar regions in Kashmir valley. It is know as the Switzerland of India.

Shimla the capital of Himachal Pradesh and one of India's most famous hill stations, derives its name from Goddess Shyamala, an incarnation of Goddess Kali, the deity of power and wrath. However, unlike its name, Shimla is a perfect heaven for those in search of tranquility. Nature has blessed this capital city with innumerable gifts and man has used them to make Shimla one of India's best destinations.

Dharamshala
The High snow clad Dhauladhar ranges of the Himalayas from a magnificent backup to the hill resort of Dharamsala is the principal township of Kangra district and overlooks the wide spread f the plains. With dense pine and deodar forests, numerous streams, cool healthy air, attractive surroundings and the nearby snowline. Dharamsala has everything for a perfect holiday.

Chamba
Chamba is Ancient Capital of Pahari Kings situated on the bank of river Ravi at an altitude of 996 meters. Chamba was founded in 920 AD but King Sahil Verma who named it after his favourite daughter Champavati. Surrounded by higher ranges Chamba has preserved the ancient culture and heritage and Chamba is known for the elegence of its temples and handicrafts.

Rohtang Pass
Rohtang Pass is the highest point, 4,112m, on the Manali-Keylong road, 51-km from Manali town. It provides a wide panoramic view of mountains rising far above clouds, which is a sight truly breath-taking. It offers only limited skiing opportunities, but trekking possibilities are immense.The pass is open from June to September, although trekkers can cross the pass from May. Beyond Rohtang pass lies the remote and, perhaps, the stark and haunting landscape of predominantly Buddhist areas. The comparative inaccessibility of the place has helped preserve the pristine culture of the people of the region.


Kullu Valley .
Kullu valley is situated on the banks of the river Beas, and is the headquarters of the district. This valley also serves as a starting place for a number of treks.

Darjeeling.


Darjeeling is the legendary British hill station perched in the foothills of the Himalayas. Located in the northern extreme of the Indian state of West Bengal, Darjeeling is just east of Nepal, just south of Sikkim, and a bit west and south of Bhutan. It is most famous for its once magnificent tea estates. Despite a steady and inexorable decline since independence, roughly a half century ago, these estates still produce a substantial portion of the world's tea. Darjeeling is a fascinating place, where the tourist can see Buddhist monasteries, visit a tea plantation, see how the tea is processed, go for a ride on the chairlift, go shopping in the colourful markets or go trekking to high altitude spots, near the border with Sikkim. Darjeeling has the unique feature of a toy train, which takes you from Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling through the steep mountainsides.


Getting There

The nearest airport to Darjeeling is the Bagdogra airport. Bagdogra is 10 kms from Darjeeling and is an important military installation. From Bagdogra one can take a bus or taxi to Darjeeling. Darjeeling has a railway station but only the toy train from Jalpaiguri and New Jalpaiguri comes here. The major trains connecting the place with all the major places in India come to Jalpaiguri or New Jalpaiguri. From here again you have to take the toy train or a bus or taxi to Darjeeling. The place is well connected by roads. The state transports run buses from Calcutta and other nearby places. The private operators also have their buses and the fair does not vary much in the state or in the private buses.


Tiger Hill

Situated at an altitude of 2590 metres (8482 ft.) and 13 kms from the town, this spot has earned international fame for the magnificent view of the sunrise over "Kanchenjunga" and the great Eastern Himalayan Mountains. Even Mount Everest, the world's highest peak, is visible from here.


Batasia Loop

About 5 kms from Darjeeling, this Railway Loop is a marvellous feat of engineering. It is fascinating to watch the toy train wind its way round the loop. The War Memorial constructed in the memory of brave sons of Darjeeling who died in different action since 1947, is worth a visit. A glorious view of snowy peak and town can be seen from this place. Entrance fee: Rs. 2/- Timings: sunrise till two hours after sunset.

Kanchenjunga View

Kanchenjunga View from Darjeeling one can have the best, uninterrupted view of the worlds third highest peak. Bhan Bhakta Sarani provides one of the enthralling views of these snow capped peaks. The Chowrasta also gives you a good sight to the Kanchenjunga peak.


Senchal Lake

Senchal Lake a scenic place near the tiger hills. This place has popularly come up as a picnic spot among the tourists. The lake supplies drinking water to the town of Darjeeling.


Natural History Museum

Natural History Museum has a collection of over 4300 specimen . Established in 1903, this natural history museum packs in its folds a rich collection of fauna found in the Himalayas and in Bengal. Among the attractions are included the estuarine crocodiles. This unique museum also has a good collection of butterflies. The mineral forms of various stones are displayed in a very attractive manner in the museum.


Darjeeling Himalayan Train

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) is one of the most well known mountain railways in the world. It was built in 1881 and is over a hundred years old today. It connects the plains of West Bengal at New Jalpaiguri with the popular hill station of Darjeeling (6812 ft), a distance of 88km.
